Study in Canada – no need for IELTS!

Due to the pandemic, a lot of schools in Canada have decided to accept Duolingo English test results with a score averaging of 115 points. Depending on the program, some schools might require a higher score on the exam. What is Duolingo? You can check their website here to learn more about them. Their best feature over IELTS is that Duolingo can be taken right in your home while IELTS has a long wait list and a lot more expensive (approx. $319 CAD).

For some nationalities, proof of your English proficiency is not even required for some schools. MVC has partnered with colleges where in they will accept nationalities where English was the medium of instruction from their past education. This means that you do not even have to submit proof of your English level – this applies to Filipinos, Australians, Kiwis, British, and some nationalities from Caribbean countries. The complete list of countries exempted will depend on the school.

Moreover, for those wherein English is not their first language, make sure you have your school credentials translated by an official translator before you apply for the school. Applications where the documents aren’t translated or are incomplete will be sent back and you’ll have to start from the beginning.

If Duolingo or IELTS is not your preferred English test, here are the other exams accepted by most colleges and universities in Canada: TOEFL, CAEL, PTE Academic, Cambridge English Test, ELE and MELAB. Again, the requirements will vary depending on the program and on the school. But out of all these tests, Duolingo is still the most convenient and there are lots of free resources found in their website and online that will allow you to prepare for the exam on your own.
